Year King Two varieties of masculine fertility deity come down from prehistory. The earliest is "Lord of Animals," worshiped as part of wild nature and connected with the hunt. The domestication of agriculture heralded arrival of a second archetype, the vigorously phallic Year King (precursor of the satyr/centaur) whose role is to assist Earth Maiden in the function of renewing plant life. This fine example from northern Greece (c. 5000 BCE) was fully 17" tall and seated upon a dais. Note dynamism of raised right hand, alert stance and erect penis held wand-like in left hand. Incised arc on belly suggests seasonal cycle of rebirth.
