Valkyrie The Choser of the Slain. These warrior maidens were the welcomers to Valhalla and the sexual companions of Vikings who died bravely. They formed the bodyguard of Odin, and as shown here bore horns of sacred honey wine which symbolized poetic inspiration. Valkyries are counterparts of the Celtic battle-raven and Egyptian funerary vulture, representing lunar and under-earth qualities of the sacred feminine. This figure comes from a 6th century grave in Birka, Sweden. |
