Sankaracharya Born in the 8th century AD he is the great mystic, saint, poet and philosopher of Hindu reform. He formulated Advaita Vedanta, showing that the ancient Vedas teach a wholeness that goes beyond monism or pluralism, and identifies the individual soul as one with the Absolute. This wisdom has been elaborated by an unbroken succession of Acharyas over the past 1200 years. Adi Sankara established in India four pithas or monastic centers of learning (in Sringeri, Puri, Dwaraka and Badrinath) which continue his Vedic traditions.
