Kartikeya / Murugan Archetype of the Spiritual Warrior. The serpent at his feet indicates that this second son of Shiva is an extension of that god's power. He is guardian deity of lovers, and is depicted always with a peacock, his vehicle and animal symbol. As an allomorph of Krishna , Murugan is considered unbalancing, rambunctious, erotic, and the harbinger of spiritual transformation for any devoted follower. Kartikeya's name in Sanskrit (Skanda) means fountain of sperm, and identifies him as the patron deity of homosexuals, who are venerated in Hinduism as exemplars of masculine-feminine balance. See Shiva.
