Sacred Source -Jagannath Deities

Home Order

Jagannath Deities This remarkable trio depict dark-skinned Jagannatha (Krishna), glowing Subhadra (Krishna's sister) and sturdy Baladeva (their protective elder brother). Highly stylized, the group represents the complex sacredness of sibling interrelationship and is venerated within Hindu popular culture, especially at monsoon. Subhadra actually represents Krishna's shakti-companion (Radha) who erotically stimulates him to Divine Love, allegorized in Nature by the life-giving rain. She also represents all-powerful goddess aspects of Durga. This idea of creative human sensuality as parallel to soul-reunion with the Absolute epitomizes the concept of tantra and elevates the copulative act to a rite of worship. Their primitive style reflects the images' probable neolithic origin.
